This state offers an ever-changing tapestry. These include rugged mountains and sprawling deserts. Quirky roadside attractions add to its untamed beauty. This adventure stretches from Fort Worth to Big Bend. It continues onward to El Paso, White Sands, and beyond. The journey is packed with scenic highways, historic sites, and breathtaking hidden gems. You will explore four National Parks: Big Bend, Carlsbad Caverns, Guadalupe Mountains, and White Sands. This is an epic adventure! Grab your coffee and notepad as we hit the road.
Leg 1: Fort Worth to Odessa (5 Hours, 320 Miles)

The open road beckons as we leave Fort Worth, heading west toward Odessa. Our first stop: Thurber, Texas, a once-thriving coal town turned ghost town, where the New York Hill Restaurant serves Texas-sized portions of nostalgia alongside homestyle cooking. Just ahead, Greystone Castle, a stunning medieval-style fortress, rises out of the plains—an unexpected sight in West Texas.
The highway carries us past miles of towering windmills, stretching from Abilene to Big Spring, where wind energy dominates the landscape. In Colorado City, we stop for a classic roadside photo at the giant cowboy boot outside Woods Boot Store, before crossing the Colorado River, a waterway that connects multiple states.

In Big Spring, we take a moment to explore the city’s namesake—a natural spring that was once a lifeline for early settlers. Then we find the towering pistol sculpture in Stanton, Texas, standing tall above I-20 westbound, is a perfect symbol of Texas’ deep-rooted cowboy and frontier heritage. The Lone Star State has long been associated with gunslingers, lawmen, and the Wild West, making this roadside attraction a fitting tribute to the state’s rugged past

We make a pit stop in Odessa, where we stand before the Odessa Meteor Crater, proof that even space has left its mark on Texas. Our lodging is at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Odessa I-20 by IHG. For additional accommodation choices, then use my favorite hotel site, Expedia, for the best prices and service.
Leg 2: Odessa to Big Bend (4 Hours, 250 Miles)

From Odessa, we journey toward Big Bend National Park, entering through Persimmon Gap at Marathon. The drive toward Terlingua is where the land truly transforms—mountains rise, the desert stretches endlessly, and West Texas reveals its wild beauty.
Staying at Stardust Big Bend in Terlingua, we wake up surrounded by pure wilderness. Our route takes us deep into Big Bend Ranch State Park, following FM 170, the famous River Road. This stretch is beyond scenic, hugging the Rio Grande, winding through canyons, and delivering breathtaking views at every turn.

Stops along this section include:
🔹 Lajitas Golf Resort—a luxury escape nestled along the Rio Grande.
🔹 Contrabando Movie Set—a relic from old Western films, now abandoned in the desert.
🔹 Big Hill Overlook—an elevation point offering jaw-dropping panoramas of the Rio Grande.

Leg 3: Big Bend to El Paso (6 Hours, 350 Miles)

Leaving Big Bend, the journey continues through Marfa, a town known for its art, mystery, and desert oddities. Here, we see:
✅ The Prada Store installation—a fashion-forward mirage in the West Texas desert.
✅ James Dean ‘Giant’ mural—a tribute to the classic movie filmed nearby.
✅ Marfa Lights Viewing Area—where floating orbs appear mysteriously at night.

Just ahead, Valentine, Texas, is mostly a ghost town, but the Valentine Texas Bar still stands—a snapshot of small-town history. Then, Van Horn greets us with views of El Capitan, a towering rock formation marking the gateway to the mountains.
On I-10, we make a quick stop at the quirky Teepee Rest Area in Sierra Blanca before arriving in El Paso, where the scenic drive offers stunning views of the city and Mexico beyond.

Leg 4: El Paso to White Sands & Beyond (2 Hours, 120 Miles)

Crossing into New Mexico, we arrive at White Sands National Park, where pure white gypsum dunes stretch across the horizon, shifting and sculpting with the wind. We settle into Alamogordo for two nights at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Alamogordo by IHG, soaking in this mesmerizing desert landscape before looping back into Texas.

Alamogordo, New Mexico offers several unique roadside attractions, including the World’s Largest Pistachio, Alamogordo’s giant “Alamogordo” landmark, and the Old Apple Barn. Additionally, you can find the VW Spider and the Air Duct Man at a local dealership, and the New Mexico Museum of Space History offers a glimpse into the area’s history with space exploration. I had to strike a pose with the XL Heart or the Desert..

Leg 5: The Final Stretch (11 Hours, 750 Miles)

Heading home, we cross the rare Salt Flats, where white crystalline landscapes meet the desert. In Pecos, we marvel at giant boot statues, a tribute to the town’s cowboy heritage. Guadalupe Mountains National Park offers mountain hikes and unmatched desert views, while Carlsbad Caverns takes us deep underground into a world of massive caves and rock formations.

One last stop—Manahons State Park, where we take in one more glimpse of Texas’ natural beauty before returning to Fort Worth, completing a journey filled with history, landscapes, and unforgettable adventure.
