When Emergencies Happen Abroad: Our Paris ER Story + Costs, Insurance, and Passport Prep by Duchess DJ Love

Why Trust My Travel Wisdom?

I use my background in commercial banking and investment to find the Regal edge in travel—maximizing luxury and peace of mind while protecting your financial legacy. To me, travel isn’t just an expense; it’s a high-return investment in your well-being.

However, the true “grit” behind my guidance comes from a decade of dementia caregiving. Navigating the world with my mom, Lady Lexie, taught me that the most important part of any trip isn’t just the destination—it’s the preparation. I’ve shared these field-tested strategies in my book, Navigating the World: Traveling with a Loved One with Dementia.

For those wanting to travel with the same security and grace we used in Paris, you can find my curated checklists. Planning tools are available in my blog store.

Unexpected Medical Costs in Paris and Medical Emergency in Paris
A joyful moment in Paris during a memorable trip with Mom featuring the iconic Eiffel Tower.

Our Real Medical Costs in Paris: What Actually Happened

In the U.S., the cost of an ambulance alone can spike your blood pressure. So when an ambulance took us to a Paris hospital, I braced for impact—financially and emotionally. Blessing: they let me ride with Mom. If they hadn’t, the language barrier and not knowing which hospital she went to would have added panic to a crisis.

At the ER, Lady Lexie was evaluated, screened, and tested. We were thirsty, anxious, and focused on her stability. In the U.S., a half-day ER visit can be extremely expensive. In France, our total out-of-pocket for the ambulance plus ER care was about $300 USD. We had travel insurance—reimbursement came later—but the point is this: know your numbers, your contacts, and your plan.

Direct answer: Preparation saved the day. Screenshot emergency numbers, understand your insurance, and keep passport/embassy details at hand.

Emergency numbers to screenshot before wheels up

  • Europe (including France): Dial 112
  • United Kingdom: Dial 999
  • United States: Dial 911
  • Thailand: Dial 191

Tip: Keep a one-screen note with local emergency number, your hotel address, and two nearby landmarks you can pronounce. Save in your phone and print a wallet card.

Cost reality check: U.S. vs. France (illustrative ranges)

These are general, illustrative ranges to help you plan. Actual costs vary by city, provider, insurance, prices for specialists and long-stay visits can vary by Sector and services rendered.

Ambulance (U.S.) — a 20-mile transport

  • Base fee: ~$400–$1,200
  • Per-mile: ~$10–$40 × 20 miles = ~$200–$800
  • Advanced life support or supplies: ~$150–$800+
  • Illustrative total: ~$800–$2,800+ without insurance

Basic ER visit (U.S.)

  • Facility fee (visit only): ~$500–$1,500
  • Common tests (labs, EKG, X-ray): ~$300–$2,000+
  • Physician fees: ~$200–$800+
  • Illustrative total: ~$1,000–$4,000+ without insurance

ER and ambulance (France)

  • Ambulance + ER visit: Often substantially lower than U.S. cash prices
  • Our Paris total (real-life): ~$300 USD out-of-pocket for ambulance + ER
  • Insurance: Reimbursed after submitting documentation

Medicine prices: France vs. U.S. (example antibiotic)

  • France (generic antibiotic, e.g., amoxicillin): Often ~€3–€15 for a typical course when paying cash
  • U.S. (generic antibiotic): Often ~$10–$30 cash via discount programs; higher at some pharmacies without discounts
  • Brand-name or complex antibiotics: Costs can be significantly higher in both countries

Important: These figures are planning aids, not guarantees. Always confirm with your insurer and local providers.

Travel insurance: how to make it work under pressure

  • Coverage map: Save a one-page summary: ER/ambulance, hospital, prescriptions, evacuation, trip interruption.
  • Contact fast: Store 24/7 claim phone + email in your notes and lock screen. Add policy number and group ID.
  • Pre-approval: Know when pre-authorization is required. If not possible during crisis, document everything and call as soon as safe.
  • Receipts & records: Ask for itemized bills, discharge papers, test summaries, and payment confirmations.
  • Post-crisis: File within the insurer’s window. Keep copies in cloud and email. Track reimbursements.

Pro move: Create a “Medical Moment” folder in your phone: emergency numbers, hotel address, insurer contacts, allergies/meds list, and your passport copies.

Passport backup plan: what to copy and where to store it

If your passport is lost or stolen, your trip halts. A clean backup plan gives you a path forward within hours, not days.

Pages to copy

  • Photo/data page: The page with your photo, full name, passport number, nationality, date of birth, and expiration date.
  • MRZ/barcode zone: The machine-readable lines at the bottom of the photo page. Ensure they’re legible in your copy.
  • Entry visa/stamp pages: If your current trip depends on a visa or recent entry stamp, capture those too.
  • ETIAS approval: Store a digital copy on your phone and having a paper copy is just as important as the passport copy itself.

Storage strategy

  • Digital: Encrypted cloud folder + email to yourself titled “Passport Backup – Trip Dates.”
  • Physical: One paper copy in your luggage; one in a separate day bag. Do not store with the physical passport.
  • Access: Add the file to your phone’s Files app and mark it “Available Offline.”

If you need a replacement

  • Report loss: Contact local police for a report number; note time and location.
  • Nearest embassy/consulate: Go with your copies, a passport photo if possible, ID, and travel itinerary.
  • Airline coordination: Call the airline’s local customer service to adjust bookings if needed.

Embassy and airline contacts: set up before you fly

Put these in one note you can access offline. Keep them on paper, too.

What to include

  • Embassy/consulate address: Full address, hours, and nearest metro stop; note the emergency number for after-hours support.
  • Embassy phone + email: Main line and emergency line; add country code formatting.
  • Airline local customer service: Local in-country number, global hotline, and your booking reference.
  • Hotel address: In local language + a landmark description; store a map pin in your phone.
  • Insurance contacts: 24/7 phone, claim email, policy number.

Sample note (copy/paste):

Embassy – Paris (Example)
Address: [Full address]
Hours: [Hours]; Emergency (after-hours): [+XX-XXX-XXX-XXXX]
Phone: [+XX-XXX-XXX-XXXX]; Email: [address@domain]

Airline – Local Customer Service (Example)
Phone: [+XX-XXX-XXX-XXXX]; Global: [+1-800-XXX-XXXX]
Booking Ref: [ABC123]

Hotel
Address: [Street, Arrondissement]; Landmark: [Nearest metro/monument]
Phone: [+33-XXX-XXX-XXX]

Insurance
24/7 Phone: [number]; Policy: [number]; Email: [claims@insurer.com]

Tip: In your phone contacts, add the country code “+33” for France or local equivalent, and label entries with emojis (🏛️ Embassy, ✈️ Airline) so they’re easy to find under stress.

Logistics under pressure: taxis, payments, and thirst

  • Taxi backup: Save two reputable local taxi numbers or apps. Carry a small cash reserve in local currency.
  • Payment mix: One no-foreign-fee card, one backup card, and cash for places that are cash-only.
  • Water + comfort kit: Collapsible bottle, oral rehydration packets, and a small snack; hospitals may have limited access to water vendors.
  • Language bridge: Pre-save a short note in the local language: “My mother is in the hospital at [name]. I need a taxi to this address.”

Medical Emergency in Paris Downloadable checklist (quick copy)

  • Emergency numbers: 112 (EU), 999 (UK), 911 (US), 191 (Thailand)
  • Insurance: Policy #, 24/7 phone, claims email, pre-approval rules

Strategies for a Royal Money Mindset

Before I began gallivanting across continents, I spent years mastering the world of finance. I have an MBA and a BS in Finance specializing in Commercial Banking and Investments. Additionally, I have experience as a former licensed securities trader. I don’t just look for ‘pretty’ travel—I look for value, legacy, and wealth-building opportunities. 📉💰

Many of you know me as Duchess DJ Love, your guide to luxury travel. However, there is a foundation of grit that drives everything I do. Beyond the bucket-list itineraries, expertise plays a crucial role in my journey. Specifically, my background in finance allows me to look for value and legacy in every trip. As a result, I am able to help you leap from passenger to protagonist in your own life.

Dementia Caregiving Experience Traveling the World

My journey hasn’t always been easy. For a decade, I was a dedicated caregiver for my mom, Lady Lexie.

Undoubtedly, this experience taught me more about resilience than any boardroom ever could. Furthermore, this unique blend of financial authority and real-world caregiving inspired the creation of my Travel and Wealth Resources. As a result, my goal is to empower women to master their money mindset and help them turn their passions into profitable side hustles. 🤱💖

🤱 The Caregiver’s Compass: Traveling with Grace and Strategy

Many caregivers believe that their world has to shrink when a loved one receives a dementia diagnosis. I’m here to tell you that with the right TravelTude, the world can still be yours to explore. My decade of caregiving for my mom, Lady Lexie, taught me that travel isn’t just a luxury for caregivers—it’s a vital form of restoration.

If you are feeling overwhelmed, start with these three “Royal Rules” for caregiving on the road:

  • The 50% Rule: Plan for half of what you think you can accomplish. This leaves room for the “divine pauses” and the extra time your loved one may need to adjust to new surroundings.
  • Routine is Your Anchor: Even in a 5-star hotel in Paris, keep the “Home Base” rituals. Bring a familiar pillowcase or a favorite playlist to keep the environment grounded.
  • Stewardship of Self: You cannot pour from an empty passport. Using my Budget Traveler’s Blueprint strategies, you can find affordable ways to bring a companion or hire local support, ensuring you get the rest you need while abroad.
