From Scarcity to Abundance: How One Lesson Changed My Life
Life has a way of testing us. There were times when scarcity felt like an ever-present shadow, where every dollar stretched beyond its limits, and dreams felt just out of reach. But I refused to let circumstances define me.
It wasn’t a dramatic event or a stroke of luck that changed everything for me—it was a single class in college, a microeconomics course I had to take for my major. I had always believed that securing a future meant earning a college degree with a high GPA. Good grades equaled success—or so I thought. But during my sophomore year, my mindset shifted forever.
The Lesson That Changed Everything
The professor—whose name I’ve long forgotten but whose lessons I’ll never shake—had a unique way of teaching us about economics. In the first few classes, he threw dollar bills and coins into the classroom. If you caught it, it was yours. A simple but effective way to demonstrate opportunity and risk.
After a few quizzes and foundational lessons, he presented us with something unexpected: an opportunity. We can take a C in the class and redirect our focus elsewhere. We could focus on tougher courses. Alternatively, we could get a job or even do nothing with that time. It was then that he explained opportunity cost—the concept that every choice we make comes at the expense of another path.
That principle embedded itself into my mind, more deeply than any theory or equation ever. I realized I had been exhausting myself, pouring endless hours into striving for a 4.0 GPA, when I could instead use my time wisely—balancing work, study, and personal growth without burning out.
From College Hustle to Financial Freedom
So, I made a choice. I stopped chasing perfection and aimed for progress. Instead of stretching myself thin, I chose balance.
- I settled for a B, knowing it meant I could work 20 hours a week, study efficiently, and attend classes fully rested.
- I found a job, then a better one, then another one with higher pay and benefits—all while remaining a full-time college student.
- I built my credit, got my first credit card, and stopped living paycheck to paycheck.
Each step led to something greater. That one lesson in opportunity cost taught me to stop struggling for an illusion of success and start making strategic decisions that truly impacted my future.
The Big Takeaway
I may not recall much else from that class, but I mastered the one principle that mattered most: Time and resources are precious. Use them wisely.
That single shift in mindset took me from scarcity to abundance. It taught me how to make money work for me instead of the other way around. And today, I live with a sense of financial security and freedom that once seemed impossible.
The journey to abundance isn’t about luck—it’s about knowing when to make the right moves.
